Abstract

Pathways to Complexity brings together a host of original archaeological research on the Preclassic period Maya and on the development of their civilization in both the northern and southern lowlands. As Kathryn Brown and George Bey demonstrate in their opening chapter, it is both a fitting and a needed follow-up to the original consideration of this topic that took place at the School of American Research and resulted in a 1977 volume edited by R. E. W. Adams etitled Origins of Maya Civilization. The contributions in Pathways to Complexity serve notice as to how far out discipline has advanced in our understanding of the rise of complexity within the Maya archaeological record.
