Abstract
This article uses figured world theory to explore how college-bound youth construct college-going identities in an urban magnet high school. The study describes how the magnet program’s local discourse socialized students to choose between the identity archetypes of "a ditcher and a scholar," suggesting, ultimately, the ways in which the college-going culture inadvertently deceived students into graduating high school with an inflated sense of their readiness for college.
