Abstract
Our study proposed an improved particle filter method with spatial distance constraints to automatically detect and segment ribs in the coronal CT images. The method consisted of two main steps: i) the location of the rib was determined by use of the particle filter with a spatial distance, and ii) the area of it in the located region was segmented by adaptive thresholding and voting selection. Our method was tested on the images from the Lung Image Database Consortium, and we employed the Dice index and overlap to evaluate the detection and segmentation of ribs.
