Abstract

Virgin Blood and Vampiric Society: The Fantastic Case of Emilia Pardo Bazan’s “Vampiro”.

Emila Pardo Bazán is considered as one of the most canonical realistic writers of 19th century Spanish literature as well as a representative figure of Spanish naturalism, which might explain why her contribution to the popular fantastic mode has often been downplayed when not altogether ignored. However, as my analysis of her short story “Vampiro” will show, Pardo Bazán has also produced one of the rare instances of fantastic literature in 19th century Spain, using the supernatural tropes not only to elicit the characteristic response of the fantastic mode but also to denounce both social hypocrisy and the exploitation of the female body.

Keywords

Pardo Bazan, Fantastic, Social criticism, vampire, feminism, popular culture
