Abstract

The Norwegian state-owned lottery and gambling company Norsk Tipping is a pioneer in the gambling industry with its secure player identification, proactive calls to players at risk and the use of mandatory loss limits.

Norsk Tipping has over the last years experienced a large growth in the online casino category and has now a market share of approximately 60%. Online casino games are the type of games that creates most problem gamblers in Norway. How can you minimize the risk and reduce the potential harm caused by these games?

In order to prevent problem gambling among the online casino players, Norsk Tipping has in place a comprehensive Responsible Gambling Framework. Some of the key elements in this framework are the use of mandatory loss limits, mandatory play break after one-hour play, digital real time interactions and proactive calls.

The presentation will go through the elements of the framework with emphasis on how they prevent problem gambling and reduces harm. Also, data analysis and customer surveys regarding mandatory loss limits will be included.

The “so what”:

A clear implication is that in order to prevent problem gambling and reduce harm, some mandatory measures should be used in addition to apply a “informed choice strategy”.
