An adolescent girl forages tafabe berries for herself and family during the dry season. This image comes from a remote location in Northern Tanzania, East Africa, just south of the famous Serengeti National Park. I study among a group of semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers, some of the last traditional foragers on the planet- The Hadza. I am blessed to work at this particular field site, as it is a unique time in human evolutionary history for studying rapid changes and its impact on populations. Humans are globalizing and urbanizing at rates never before seen in our hominin lineage. As an anthropologist, we must not only consider what makes us “human” from an evolutionary perspective, but also how access to quality foods, proper health care services, and formal education shape the human experience.
