Hawaiians Are Pretty Fly

Description

PhD student Katherine E. Schultz studies the Hawaiian Drosophila grimshawi in the lab of Dr. Donald K. Price. These flies are as alluring as they are important because they are a classic example of how one species can become a new species over time. The goal of this research is to understand the connection between genes and behaviors and how they vary and change in the natural world. These beautiful “picture-wing” flies show us just how much variation exists between very closely related species, making them the perfect model organisms to observe and begin to answer these questions.
