Abstract

The goal of embedded librarianship is to immerse librarians in academic spaces in a deep, connected way. The term is used to encompass various methods of embedding, including: playing a role in online courses; being present in an academic department; participating in a face-to-face class throughout a semester; or providing services in a residential dormitory. This chapter considers two types of embedded librarianship, embedding in an academic department and embedding in online courses, and reflects on necessary skills, effective actions, and recommendations. It concludes with a section on how to define the purpose and scope of an embedding initiative and how to craft measurable outcomes to judge success.
