Abstract

In this chapter, I analyze retention vote shares in five states with robust, state-sponsored JPE programs. I find some evidence that the JPE recommendations matter. I also find some support for the proposition that voters react to specific negative assessments of judges by lawyers, even when these assessments do not cause JPE commissions to issue overall negative retention recommendations.
