Barbara Kasten's photographs serve as precedent for a new generation of artists fascinated with the photo materialist processes of photograms, abstraction, and geometric construction. This article addresses Kasten's provocative use of props as a form of performative photography, deeply involved with questions of staging, choreographing, and prompting. My essay, therefore, plumbs this idea of photography beyond the image/index into performance.
