Abstract

Deficit narratives about young black men and their communities and families fail to consider the larger context of systematic racism, inequality, and inadequate educational funding. In Urban Preparation: Young Black Men Moving from Chicago’s South Side to Success in Higher Education, Chezare Warren uses counter-storytelling to provide an alternative perspective on the problem of low educational attainment for urban African American men. This book is the first in the Harvard Education Press Race and Education series, a collection focused on broad themes related to racial justice in education.
