Abstract
It was fall—a ruddy point in mid-October when the romantic crisp crackle of fallen leaves turned to muddy debris and it was impossible to set foot outside without making a mess of your shoes. Mid-October, when the rains started, and though there was no promise of snow, there was nonetheless a chill in the air in the Pacific Northwest when Santa Claus came to town.
