Abstract

Domestic violence is among one of the most underreported crimes in the United States. Yet, national and international estimates suggest that approximately one in three girls/women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. Research also demonstrates that this form of gendered violence is commonplace in the lives of millions of women and that it has deleterious effects on survivors, including suicide attempts, completed suicides, and homicide‐suicides. These phenomena are summarized in this entry, including prevalence and incidence rates, risk factors associated with each, and judicial responses.
