Abstract

The excessive use of prescribed drugs and/or illegal drugs has become an increasingly important issue in modern society. Persons with intellectual disability (ID) have also been markedly affected due to the use of drugs just like the common man within the society on the whole. The purpose of this chapter is to define the problem, describe risk factors, and outline methods and procedures for assessment of substance abuse. Issues in differential diagnosis will also be covered. How specific adaptations are required for persons with intellectual disabilities will also be addressed.
