Abstract
After reading this article, the reader will be able to: Distinguish the scope of practice (what professionals are qualified to do, given their educational background and training) among nutrition and exercise professionals. Provide guidelines that address 1) minimizing legal liability associated with providing nutrition information without a state license or other appropriate credentials, and 2) minimizing risk and unintendedconsequencesassociated with providing nutrition, diet, or exercise counseling by those without appropriate knowledge and/or credentials. © 2016 by the American College of Sports Medicine.
