Abstract
- UNLV provides stewardship of Walking Box Ranch (WBR) by providing a caretaker who oversees the property, facilitating use of the property by researchers and educators, developing a use and research policy for the property, and coordinating these activities with BLM and in accordance with TNC restrictions.
- UNLV currently addresses security issues for the property through the presence of the caretaker and two Metro Officers who reside on the property in two recreational vehicles.
- UNLV met with Senator Reid representative on June 20 to provide information about project progress and to request the Senator’s support in obtaining further funding for the project.
- Visits to the ranch this quarter included: representatives from UNLV Engineering who visited the ranch to work on the weather station, UNLV Educational Outreach conducted a class (27 attendees) called “From Mining to Hollywood, 51 people from the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNLV who visited the ranch for a history tour, Geri and Wayne Kodey visited the ranch in preparation for their 4/17/11 class on photography held at the ranch, the UNLV Educational Outreach held a class on photography (36 attendees), Dr. Jeff Crouse, UNLV Adjunct Faculty and Silent Film historian, visited the ranch to investigate research ideas, contractors for AECOM and BLM visited the ranch to as an introduction to the VA meeting, approximately 20 teachers and instructors took a tour of the ranch and used the site to demonstrate classroom and field laboratory experiments in geology.
