Abstract

On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses, this group comprises one of the primary lineages in the phylum Verrucomicrobia and is equivalent to subdivision 2 (Hugenholtz etal., 1998) of the phylum. The majority of its members appear to be soil-inhabiting bacteria, while some are endosymbionts of nematodes. A few 16S rRNA gene sequences have been recovered from freshwater habitats. The Spartobacteria currently comprise one order, the Chthoniobacterales, and a single family, Chthoniobacteriaceae. All members of this group are Gram-stain-negative.
