Abstract
Encompasses bacteria isolated from freshwater or marine aquatic ecosystems and from animal feces, within the class Verrucomicrobiae. The order contains the families Verrucomicrobiaceae, Akkermansiaceae, and Rubritaleaceae. Delineation of the order is determined primarily by phylogenetic information from 16S rRNA gene sequences. All stain Gram-negative and have a Gram-negative cell structure. All are chemoorganotrophic. Includes obligate aerobes, facultative anaerobes, and strict anaerobes.
