Abstract

The essay traces some of the intense debates about same-sex partnerships, family formations, and marriage among activists in the mid- to late twentieth century United States. It reviews the arguments of activists on all sides of the issues, from the earliest proponents of lesbian and gay couples creating alternative celebrations of their relationships, to the development and acceptance of municipal and state-level civil unions and domestic partnerships, to the ultimate triumph of those seeking marriage equality for gay people. Throughout, the essay focuses on the ways in which these debates have been contained within an American rights-based framework.
