Abstract
Both Brazil and the United States share histories of “whitening” their populations and bleaching people’s cultures. Mainstream media was not able to navigate this history of colonization and instead continued to perpetuate these themes at the 2016 Olympic games in Rio, where journalists missed chances to adequately explore the diverse stories of many U.S. athletes, like Anthony Ervin, among others.
