This image shows the calibration of a Raman spectrometer in our lab in the Physics & Astronomy dept. A collaborator from Geoscience had a collection of thin slices of garnet formed below the Earth’s surface with tiny specks of calcite trapped within. Using our instrument, we could calculate the depth beneath the surface at which the rock was formed by observing pressure-induced changes in the vibrational spectra of the microscopic calcite specks. Before we could do that, however, we needed a reference spectrum from un-pressurized calcite, to which my collaborator said “I have just the thing…”
