Abstract

This chapter focuses on evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) treatment for adolescent substance use disorders. The chapter provides information on the primary intervention modalities for treating adolescent substance use (ASU): individual/group and family-based. A core elements approach yielding six core elements of CBT is described, and pragmatic CBT interventions are outlined that can be incorporated in multiple modalities. A family-based CBT model for ASU, family behavior therapy, is described and its eight primary intervention components illustrated. Four worksheets for clinical practice are included, and we conclude by discussing the clinical spectrum of family involvement in CBT for youth with ASU.
