Abstract
This collection of poems, Thanks for Your Gift, explores what it means to love. Largely inspired by Erich Fromm’s The Art of Loving, this manuscript asks the reader to break down and question their conceptions of love and intimacy. What does it mean to be close to another person? What can one do when closeness is impossible? What is family, friend, lover? No ultimate conclusion is reached in this manuscript, but it becomes evident that love, like any art, is a practice. With practice, knowledge, and concentration, a person can become more loving, mature, and self-realized. Thanks for Your Gift itself is a practice. The process of writing brings one closer to oneself and opens the writer to new understandings by creating a field of relations. The purpose of this book of poems is to bring the reader to a new awareness of self, to guide the reader in questioning conceptions of love and care, of kinship and the erotic.
